Do wind turbines shed chemicals or plastics into the environment?

There is no evidence to suggest that renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines, poses a contamination risk to livestock, crops or food production when co-located with agricultural land.

Wind turbine blades are engineered for durability and undergo regular maintenance to minimise erosion. On average, around 50g of protective coating is applied per blade each year, which represents the scale of material potentially lost.

Blade materials are inert and non-toxic once cured and contain at most microscopic traces of BPA. For context, everyday products such as receipts, food packaging, tyres, and textiles release vastly more BPA and microplastics than wind turbines ever could.
