Local firefighting and emergency services are highly involved in the development of renewable energy projects in Australia.
For example, Victoria’s Country Fire Authority (CFA) developed Australia’s first guidelines for the design and construction of renewable energy facilities. During the project’s development phase, the CFA works actively with the developer and stakeholders on fire prevention, appropriate maintenance, vegetation clearing, provision of firefighting water and preparation of emergency management plans.
The CFA has operational procedures to respond to emergencies at renewable energy facilities, and their leaders work closely at a local level to ensure brigades and volunteers are familiar with any renewable energy development and given the training to support this.
