What is shadow flicker and how is it managed?

Each state and territory in Australia has rules about how far wind turbines must be from homes—usually between 1 and 1.5 kilometers.

At these distances, the chance of shadow flicker (the flickering effect caused by sunlight passing through moving blades) is already very low and only happens in rare situations.

Additionally, some turbine manufacturers have created a smart system that can detect when shadow flicker might affect a home and temporarily pause the turbine to prevent it.

Shadow flicker is modelled during the wind farm development to meet statutory requirements, and then monitored during the operations phase to ensure compliance.
